Two sisters

Whereas Eileen had only married once her sister Jo had married thrice. Jo was just like that. Jo the extravagant baby of the family and Eileen the prudish elder child. Jo had been the one who suggested they join the seamen’s mission- a dance held on Sunday evenings (tea and sandwiches provided) to give young sailors an alternative to the embraces of fallen women while they were on shore leave. “We’re carrying out God’s work.” Jo would say staring intently into the mirror while pinching her cheeks. Eileen looked on skeptically, but agreed to go because there would be some bible readings and a small sermon at the end of the social.  Jo ended up having some sort of fling with the young “dark” minister with “such a wonderful speaking voice” and there was talk of her becoming a missionary for a few months until she decided that becoming a nurse would be much more fashionable.

The years rolled on.

Jo came to visit Eileen in the nursing home, she was much more sprightly than her 88 year old sister. “I know just the thing Eileen, I’ll help you have a bath- you’ll feel good as new.” Again Eileen looked on skeptically but Jo always got her way. Eileen began to get cagey when it came to undressing. “For heaven’s sake Eileen, whatever’s the matter?” There was a long pause, “No one’s ever seen me naked Jo.” “WHAT?!” (Jo had been a pioneer of a nudist colony in southern England.) “Well we shall soon fix that.”

Eileen would admit under duress that the experience had been somewhat liberating.
